Googling is part of the journey! =) One of those practice theorems mentions you should take the themes of the puzzles, or anything M mentions a lot as possible clues towards a cipher or solve process. So on this puzzle, you could have tried to google "bacon codes" or something and it might have popped up

In the end, I found the "unique" variant. (Yes, I had to use a hint). Obscure, though, it seemed, and hard to find, for me. That's not an aspect of puzzle-solving that I find to be very satisfying.
