We have found the following letter for the bottom strands "PACHACUTI" However, we cannot figure out how they fit into the 11 spaces at the bottom. Any help?

I agree. My only real complaint with both the MT books is the poor color definition in the printing makes them extra tough for people like me who are somewhat colorblind. I actually guessed the right answer based on ESTATEFOR and the geographic location of the puzzle. Then looking at the answer, it was still hard to see some of the color combinations in the strings.

If you create a puzzle based on color, you need to make sure the colors are printed correctly. This puzzle was impossible as printed.

1st take: I find it interesting that I know what factors are needed. But will I select the correct components to achieve the correct, desired result?

Fortunately even with this printing error, getting PACH_CUTI makes it intuitively easy to solve, especially given you have ESTATE FOR in the ropes above.

On January 24, 2023 at 12:44AM EST Just-A responded to Mcdevroc:

Starting with the sixth rope, we're given 5 beige knots = E, beige = 1.

Moving to the ninth rope, 3 beige + 3 red = R (18). If beige = 1, then red = 5.

To the second rope, 5 beige + 1 red = 10, and we need to get to 19 (S), so blue = 3.

Now we can solve for green and yellow by moving to the fifth rope.

Given blue = 3 and red = 5, we have 19. We need to get to 20 (T). With 6 yellow knots and 2 green knots, we need to solve 6y+2g=1. If yellow = 0.5 and green = -1, then 6(0.5)+2(-1)=1 checks out.

Yes, it was because the second to last knot is not pure white (-2), but beige and white entwined (-1). It is very difficult to distinguish in the image provided.

Did anyone else have difficulty with the 5th letter in the clue which leads to the answer? I did this with my wife and we both got 0. I feel like the key was wrong?

When did you buy the book? I have the older version, where the colors are definitely a little hard to differentiate, but a friend has a newer copy where it seems to be fixed.

I agree that the colors are poorly rendered and are unreasonably hard to discern. I have determined the value for each color, and applied it to the lower row, but the answer makes no sense and is apparently incorrect, probably because I am misperceiving one or more colors.

It's White and Tan. I also strugged with this one knot. Terrible color rendering.

What is the color of knot located in the bottom Quipu, 5th strand, 7th down? I looked at the solution and am struggling with the value assigned to this one.

I liked this one. It was hard for me to see/interpret the differences in the colors sometimes, though, which made it take longer than it would have if the colors had been really clear. Confused for a bit by the number of red lines, until I got a little history lesson from google.
